North Country Trail Winter Hikes for 2018

Hiawatha Shore-to-Shore chapter (HSS) of the North Country Trail Association (NCTA) will be hosting area hikes in the Newberry and Paradise area through the year.  The initial event is the “First Hike” January 1st at Tahqua Trail at 10:00 AM.  This hike skirts the banks of the Tahquamenon River and has easy access and exit points from and to Tahqua Trail road.  The group will gather for an optional late lunch at the Tahquamenon Falls Pub and Brewery after the snowshoe/ski hike.  This is a great way to celebrate New Year’s Day!  The NCT along Tahqua Trail is relatively flat and has numerous structures over the creeks and gullies.
The NCTA sponsors the North Country Trail 100 Mile Challenge each year.  A 50 Mile Challenge has been added for 2018!   The “First Hike” will count as your first challenge miles on the NCT!  Joining the challenge is a great way to experience more of the NCT and to increase your physical activity.  Walking outdoors is an excellent way to tone the body, and it relaxes and soothes the mind.  For more information on the 100 Mile and 50 Mile Challenges and to sign up visit the North Country Trail website www.northcountrytrail.org.
The group will also host a snowshoe/ski hike at the January 27th Winter Carnival in Paradise.  Some hikers plan to enjoy the community Pancake Breakfast at Paradise Community Center before heading to Tahqua Trail for the 10:00 AM Winter Carnival Hike .
These NCT snowshoe and ski hikes are leisurely paced in small groups with stops to enjoy the scenery and the comradery of a group of outdoors minded folks.  Hikers of all skill levels are invited to join HSS for and all of their hikes.
Hikers should dress in layers for the weather and bring snowshoes or skis, water, and camera.  Friends and family are welcome.  Free light snacks are provided by the HSS Goodie Bucket!  These hikes are a great way to explore the NCT in winter while enjoying the company of new and old friends.
HSS events are posted on the chapter’s Facebook page at @NCTAHSS.
Recently the chapter and Tahquamenon Falls State Park wrapped the Wolf Lake Project. The HSS Roving Crew assisted Great Lakes Conservation Corps crews in constructing over 900 feet of boardwalks, two 16 foot bridges, and a mile of new trail tread.  The HSS Roving Crew laid ground cover and gravel for a quarter mile just inside the east park boundary.
You can explore the project by stopping at the first Little Two Hearted bridge on C-500 and hike east toward M-123.  You will immediately experience a mile of new trail tread and about 3 miles in two new boardwalks and a new 16 foot bridge.
There is also great hiking west of C-500.   A new boardwalk was constructed and tread improvements were made in that section.
The Superior Shoreline Chapter and HSS are working with Muskallonge and Tahquamenon Falls State Parks to promote a “Park to Park Hike”.  The scenery along the Lake Superior shoreline is spectacular. The hike can be experienced by day hiking or backpacking.  The distance between Muskallong SP and the Upper Falls is 36 miles and from Muskallonge to the Tahquamenon River Mouth is 55 miles.

A Matter of Balance - HNJH

On Tuesday from 17 Apr. 2018 to 5 Jun. 2018.

A Matter of Balance Class to be held again in Newberry
Have you turned down a chance to go out with family or friends because you were concerned about falling? Have you cut down on a favorite activity because you might fall? If so, A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls is a program for you.
Fear of falling can be just as dangerous as falling itself. People who develop this fear often limit their activities, which can result in severe physical weakness, making the risk of falling even greater. Many older adults also experience increased isolation and depression when they limit their interactions with family and friends. A Matter of Balance can help people improve their quality of life and remain independent.
A Matter of Balance is designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults. Participants learn to set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and learn simple exercises to increase strength and balance.
